High profile custody dispute gets ugly

Child custody disputes are notoriously contentious. With so many issues to address including the legal and physical custody of the child, visitation rights and child support, it is understandable why so many people have difficulty resolving these issues amicably. This is especially true when the child custody case involves high-profile parents.

Minnesota readers may have heard about the ongoing child custody dispute involving Olympic skier Bode Miller and Miller's ex-romantic partner. For those unfamiliar with the case, the famous Olympian and the former U.S. Marine have been stuck in a contentious child custody dispute since before the Sochi Olympics. At the center of the unfortunate legal battle is the couple's 13-month-old son.

Before Sochi, Miller briefly had custody of his son. The child was then returned to the custody of his mother. At a recent hearing the judge told the parties that if they were unable to reach agreement on custody in a week or the court would conduct a hearing-meaning the judge would take testimony from witnesses and then make the decision for the couple.

In addition to custody, the couple is fighting about child support. One of the mother's lawyers recently accused Miller of failing to pay child support. Miller's attorney, however, was quick to deny the accusation, stating that child support is pending in a separate legal proceeding in Miller's home state of California.

In every divorce there are complex issues that that require resolution. When these issues arise it is important to remember that if the parties are unable to reach an agreement, the court will make the decision for them. While disagreements are understandable, maintaining a working relationship with the other side is the best way to retain some control of the results.
