Kardashian and Humphries could face complicated divorce

These days it seems like no one can go a single day without being inundated with news about the high-profile divorce between Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries, professional basketball player and Minnesota native. While their 72-day marriage is fodder for celebrity gossip enthusiasts, there may be some difficult legal issues when determining the terms of their split. This is often the case for Minnesota families dealing with complex asset division.

To further complicate this divorce, people close to Kardashian are saying she was responsible for planning out the intricate details of Humphries' proposal to marry her. Some say she even told Humphries to spell "Will You Marry Me?" in rose petals.

Apparently, Humphries wanted to ask Kardashian to marry him in Minnesota, but he ended up proposing at Kardashian's home in California. Humphries intended for the event to be private, but, of course, the event was featured on national television.

Humphries has suggested there are more details that will soon be released regarding their short marriage.

Certainly, this particular engagement, marriage and divorce have been a media spectacle, but this does not mean there will not be substantial legal complexities when working out the terms of the divorce. Both Humphries and Kardashian are wealthy people, so they will have significant financial assets to divide.

Minnesota couples dealing with a high-asset divorce must be made aware of the complexities of dividing their assets. Each party has an interest in receiving what they determine to be just. Navigating the emotional effects of a divorce can be painful enough, and a nasty settlement battle can potentially be avoided if the proper steps are taken.
